Jen Orpin
Jen Orpin paints the places most of us only pass through. Over the past decade she has made hundreds of paintings of motorway bridges, slip roads and brutalist infrastructure, finding quiet grandeur in the landmarks of everyday journeys. Working in oil on canvas, birch plywood and cradled panel, she turns these overlooked structures into contemplative spaces of memory, nostalgia and human connection.
Born in Surrey in 1974, Orpin studied Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University and has worked from Rogue Artists’ Studios in Manchester since 2000. Her motorway paintings have featured in The Guardian, The Observer’s New Review and on BBC Radio 6 Music, and her work is held in the collections of Manchester Art Gallery and The New Art Gallery Walsall.
